Local Philanthropy

The Dayton Alumnae Association

Philanthropy 1-2-3
As individuals with time, talents and treasures, Kappas first support our sisters; second, we participate in local service projects; and third, we serve the greater good.

How Kappa Contributes

Our chapter women support elementary schools, Relay for Life, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, YWCA, Food Pantries, and Reading is Fundamental to name a few. Chapter fundraising events have supported causes such as the American Cancer Society, breast cancer/Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, tsunami relief, and multiple sclerosis research.

Delta Lambda, We support our Active chapter at Miami University with advisers and financial contributions as well as sharing a tradition of Founders Day each year.

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), our official philanthropic partner, has been supported nationally through the donation of thousands of books and volunteer hours to Boys and Girls Clubs, elementary schools and hospitals. We currently support a classroom of special needs elementary boys contributing books to their classroom library and financial support for their summer reading program.

Dayton YWCA Women's Shelter-  The "Closet of Hope" was originally established by the Junior League of Dayton to provide clothing for women and children staying in the domestic violence shelters in Montgomery and Preble counties. Many women escaping domestic violence come to a shelter with just the clothes on their back. The Closet is set up much like a store where clients are invited to shop and select clothing based on their personal preferences.   Last year alone, 635 women and children were provided 29,254 nights of emergency protective shelter at the YWCA.   We support the Closet of Hope with donations of new personal care items for women and children staying at the shelter.  We collect donations at our Fall and Spring meetings each year.    If you would like to support them with other items, they are also in need of women and children's gently used clothing of all sizes, especially women's plus size and maternity clothing, children's socks and underwear, baby clothes and accessories.   Donations can be dropped off seven days a week between 6 am and 9 pm at the main YWCA building at 141 W Third St. in downtown Dayton.   Donors are asked to come through the main entrance that faces Third Street.   For more information, Contact Nicholas Hubbard, donations coordinator at 937-461-5550, ext 127.

Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation Our chapter also supports the foundation with financial gifts and Rose McGill magazine subscription sales to help fund scholarships, confidential aid, education and training, and support of our two museums.

 Dayton Alumnae Panhellenic Association.

Kappa has been a part of the DAPA since its inception.  This organization was founded in 1932 and Maurene Smith, of Kappa Kappa Gamma, served as their first president from 1932-1933.  Becky Dooley served from 1953-54.  Nancy Sayre served from 1973-74.  Jennifer Hart Schaffer served from 1993-1994.  Michelle Rodgers served from 2007-2008.

It was in 1992, when Jennifer Hart Schaffer encouraged DAPA to think big and encouraged a team approach to their fundraising efforts.   She suggested the association focus on one big fundraiser a year.  The luncheon and fashion show was the result and has continued to grow with the addition of a silent auction and a raffle.   In April of 2013, the DAPA celebrated it 80th Anniversary!   They were able to award $5,400. in scholarships to Greek collegiate and alumnae women that year.

DAPA is a great way to meet fellow sorority women in the Dayton area.  We are looking for 1-2 Dayton alums who would serve as Panhellenic delegates for Kappa in the Dayton Alumnae Panhellenic Association.   Contact us if you are looking for a great way to serve our community and support our Scholarship mission while meeting other Panhellenic women in our community.   This is a great position if you are new in town since you will meet many other greek ladies in the community.

If you have questions or would like more information-  contact Michelle Rodgers at mrodgers2@woh.rr.com  or Terri Hemmelgarn at  themmelgarn@gmail.com.   We would really love to continue the strong tradition that Kappa has helped establish in the greater Dayton Panhellenic community.

This year's Fashion Show and Luncheon was held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Hope Hotel and Conference Center near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base from 11 am-2pm.   This event is a luncheon/fashion show/silent auction. Kappa is responsible for donating three items worth approximately $25 each to the Panhellenic Fashion Show’s silent auction.
